The materials first

Twenty-five years. The principle has never changed: you master the material before you master the work. That logic was Ted Sampley's — a Vietnam vet with a screenprinting shop and no patience for shortcuts — and it has driven every surface I've touched since.

Decorative painting at commercial scale is unforgiving. Venetian plaster on a 20-foot restaurant wall has to read at distance and hold at close inspection, in light you can't control and against a deadline you can't move. That precision doesn't come from knowing the finish. It comes from having made every mistake it's possible to make, at real scale, with real consequences.
